Known as the “Land’s End” due to its location at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, Los Cabos has been attracting travelers from all over the world since time immemorial. The municipality features everything, from astonishing natural attractions to world-class resorts.
There are many things to do in Los Cabos. If you are at a loss on where to start as you take a break from looking at luxury homes in Cabo San Lucas, do not miss the following essential activities.
Stroll along the Marina Cabo San Lucas
The Marina Cabo San Lucas offers a great introduction into the Los Cabos lifestyle. Located on a protected bay, it is a yachting, dining, and shopping destination rolled into one.
The Marina is also a great starting point for sport fishing, one of the most popular water activities in Los Cabos. The Sea of Cortez is teeming with marine life. Possible catches include marlin, swordfish, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, dorado, snapper, and sailfish.
Visit San Jose del Cabo
Approximately 32 kilometers from Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo is a stark contrast from the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Where the marina can be loud and lively, San Jose del Cabo is much quieter and laidback.
San Jose del Cabo features lovely colonial architecture with a distinct Mexican flair, interspersed with luxury resorts. You can go on an art walk every Thursday evening (if you happen to visit between November and June), sample the local mezcal and food stalls, immerse yourself in local culture, play golf at Palmilla Golf Club, and check out the local beaches: Playa Santa Maria and Playa Palmilla, among other activities.
Head to Land’s End
“Land’s End” is the collection of granite formations that mark the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula (hence the name). It’s where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. It’s also the spot where you can see one of the most iconic landmarks in all of Cabo San Lucas, El Arco.
Other formations at this spot include Pelican Rock and the Window to the Pacific. In order to get up close to these formations, you’ll have to take a boat. You can also enjoy the view from a further distance with a sunset cruise.
Go whale watching
During the months of November and March, marine visitors swim by the waters around Los Cabos: whales. Thousands of these majestic creatures migrate to the area to give birth and then migrate back up north toward Alaska.
Humpbacks and gray whales are the most commonly seen here, but it’s not unusual to see blue whales or orcas either. A vast majority of cruise boat operators will offer whale watching trips on a daily basis during these months, allowing visitors and residents of Cabo San Lucas an opportunity to get up close and personal with these marine giants.
Be part of the sea turtle conservation
There are eight sea turtle species in the world and five of them nest on the shores of Cabo San Lucas. When baby sea turtles hatch, they have to make their way to the ocean. In order to get there, however, they have to traverse the beach, which can be a perilous journey. As they move, they are at risk for becoming prey for birds or crabs.
Conservation groups and even some local resorts have created volunteer programs that residents and visitors to Cabo San Lucas can become a part of, helping baby sea turtles make the journey safely to the sea. Summer is considered the sea turtle nesting season.
Play golf in some of the world’s most famous courses
Los Cabos is home to some of the top golf courses in the world. Several were designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus, including the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol as well as the coastal courses of El Dorado and Palmilla.
The area is now also home to courses designed by Greg Norman, Fred Couples, and Tom Weiskopf. Los Cabos has 15 golf courses total, four of which are ranked among the top 100 courses in the world by Golf Digest.
There is no shortage of incredible things to do in Cabo San Lucas. No matter if you’ve lived here for several years or you’re just moving in, there will always be something to explore.
